At IFA 2015 in Berlin, Germany, which kicked off early this month, Sony lifted the lid on the Sony XPERIA Z5, the Sony XPERIA Z5 Compact, and the Sony XPERIA Z5 Premium. The XPERIA Z5 Premium is the world’s first smartphone that comes with a 5.5-inch 4K screen. It was initially believed that this was the previously rumoured Sony XPERIA Z5 Ultra phablet. However, according to a new report, the two are two different devices.

Sony XPERIA Z5 Ultra to be officially unveiled in March of 2016?

The new rumour comes to us courtesy of PricePony. According to the site, the Sony XPERIA Z5 Ultra will be officially unveiled on March of next year. Interestingly, that will be after MWC 2016, which kicks off in Barcelona, Spain from the 22nd to the 25th of February, where smartphone manufacturers usually lift the lid on new devices.

PricePony also leaked the Sony XPERIA Z5 Ultra’s specs. According to the site, the phablet’s screen will be bigger than the 5.5-inch screen of the XPERIA Z5 Premium at 6.44 inches. Like the Z5 Premium, the Z5 Ultra’s screen will have a resolution of 2160 x 3840 pixels (Ultra HD or 4K). Like other smartphones in Sony’s new Z5 series, the device will sport a 23-megapixel rear-facing camera, which Sony boasts comes with the world’s fastest autofocus. To keep everything running for a long time, the device comes with a 4,000 mAh battery. Now comes the most interesting part of the leak. The XPERIA Z5 Ultra is said to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU under the hood, coupled with 4 GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 820 will not be available until the first quarter of 2016, so it would make sense for the XPERIA Z5 Ultra to be available by then. Since the phablet comes with a bigger 4K screen, we’re sure the Snapdragon 820 will be more than able to handle the processing requirements needed to run all of the hardware on board the device.

Sony XPERIA Z5 series devices come with the Snapdragon 810 under the hood, which seems to still suffer from overheating issues. To address these issues, leaked photos showing a torn down Z5 Premium reveals the use of twin heat tubes and thermal paste (the first smartphone to use the substance to regulate heat) for better heat management. We’re hoping Sony doesn’t have to resort to the same measures with the XPERIA Z5 Ultra with the Snapdragon 820 on board.

Of course, since this is anything but official, take this with a pinch of salt.
